TOWNSVILLE AIRPORT - UPGRADING

The Minister for Aviation, Mr Wal Fife, said today

that the Government had approved works at Townsville which would

complete the upgrading works for international services and will

provide vastly improved domestic facilities.

The works for international services which would be .

carried out at an estimated cost of $4.5 million would include

further extensions of the aircraft parking apron, widening of

taxiways, construction of access roads and additional car parking

space, provision of a baggage claim area and provision of weather

protection on the frontage of the terminals.

"The work at the international terminal will complement

and complete the work already undertaken at a cost of $5.6 million",

Mr Fife said.

"With regard to the domestic terminal, the Government has

given consideration to the tourist developments at Townsville and

has agreed to provide $3.6 million to allow the expansion and

improvements to the existing domestic terminal.

"Both the international and domestic works will require

the consideration of the Parliamentary Public Works Committee

and hearings of the Committee will be sought as planning and

design has progressed sufficiently.

"The work to be carried out at Townsville is part of the

largest airport development program fever undertaken in Australia.

The total aviation capital program is $580 million.

Expenditure this financial year is estimated at $174 million.

Mr Fife said that as most of the work will be undertaken

by private contractors it will provide a stimulus to employment

throughout the country.

"The Government's commitment to airport development

indicated its confidence in the future of the aviation industry",

he added.

Mr Fife said that he had informed the Federal Member

for Herbert, Mr A.G. Dean.of the Budget decision.
