EMBARGOED AGAINST DELIVERY .

Ifie new Minister for Aviation, Mr Wal. Fife, today joined the old

with the new in a ceremony to mark the official start of work on upgrading

Norfolk Island Airport.

Mr Fife operated a forty year old bulldozer to mark the official

start of work, the same bulldozer used in 1942 to build the original airfield

which began the allied war effort in the South Pacific.

The Minister said the upgrading would cost an estimated $6.9 million

and would be completed progressively by 1983. Work was being scheduled to

enable medium size jet aircraft services to be introduced.

He said the project involved the building of a new sealed runway,

improvements to cross runway and engineering services, upgrading taxiways and

aircraft aprons, and minor extensions to the terminal building. New

navigational aids will also be provided.

"The new Airport will provide safer, quicker and more comfortable

services to Norfolk Island and ensure the maintenance of a healthy tourist

industry, which is so important to the Island's economy", Mr Fife said.

However, Mr Fife stressed that every effort would be made to keep

disturbances to the Island's beautiful environment to a minimum.

"The provision of faster air services between the mainland and

Norfolk Island will also serve to strengthen the links between the Island and

mainland", he said.

Mr Fife said that he was delighted that a contract had been let to a

local company to supply crushed rock for the project. The contractor for

building the main sealed runway is Kaipara Excavators Limited of New Zealand.

He said that this would assist the Island's economy and would

provide significant employment on the Island.

The Minister recalled that the Public Works Committee of the

Commonwealth Parliament had examined the upgrading proposal and reported

favourably on the project to Parliament in September 1980.

"In line with the Committee's recommendations close liaison and

consultation will be maintained throughout the work with the Norfolk Island

Government," Mr Fife said.

The Minister also said that upgrading of this Airport will parallel

developments in his own electorate where Albury Airport is being upgraded and

will be served by the same company, East-West Airlines, with their Fokker F28

aircraft.

During his one day visit to the Island Mr Fife took the opportunity

to meet with the Administrator and Members of the Legislative Assembly.

Mr Fife said that the Island occupies a unique place in the history

of Australia and has a special relationship to the mainland through the

arrangements established under the Norfolk Island Act.
