Statement By THE AUSTRALIAN MINISTER FOR AGRICULTURE

MEAT SALES TO U.S.S.R.

The Minister for Agriculture, Senator Ken Wriedt

announced today that he had been advised by the Chairman of

the Australian Meat Board, Col. Malcolm McArthur, that a

sale of 10,000 tonnes of beef had been made by Australia

to the U.S.S.R.,

The beef is. for shipment in December> January and

February and wilit be in frozen quarter form. Negotiations

were continuing with the U.S.S.R. on further beef contracts.

In addition, he said, discussions were being held on possible

sales to Russia of substantial quantities of carcase mutton

in the new year. ' . . , ,

. The Minister said that it was gratifying that

a substantial quantity of beef was being sold at a time when

the industry was going through a depressed period.
