APPOINTMENT OF AUSTRALIAN ELECTORAL OFFICER FOR QUEENSLAND

The Minister for Administrative Services, Mr

Kevin Newman, today announced the appointment of Mr Brian

Nugent as Australian Electoral Officer for Queensland.

Mr Nugent, who has been appointed for 7 years as from 4

January 1983, will fill the position previously occupied

by Mr F.J. Coleman, who in August 1982 was appointed

Australian Electoral Officer for New South Wales.

Mr Nugent, who is 46 years of age, holds Master

of Arts (Honours) and Bachelor of Letters Degrees from

the University of New England and a Bachelor of Arts

Degree from the University of Queensland.

Prior to joining the Australian Electoral

Office in 1976, Mr Nugent was employed as a teacher with

the Queensland Department of Education from 1955 to 1965

and as a lecturer in government and politics at the Royal

Australian Naval College, Jervis Bay for ten years.

Since joining the Australian Electoral Office,

he has worked in the Central Office in Canberra where he

has held positions of Director of the Information and

Electoral Education Section and Director of the Research,

Legislation and Projects Section. He is currently in

charge of the Development Branch.

Mr Newman said that the position of Australian

Electoral Officer for Queensland is an important one in

Commonwealth electoral administration and he is confident

that Mr Nugent will bring to it the initiative and drive

required.
