STATEMENT BY THE HON. R.I. VINER, M.P., MINISTER FOR ABORIGINAL AFFAIRS

VISIT TO ABORIGINAL COMMUNITIES IN N.T. '

. . The Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Mr Ian Viner, the Secretary of his Department, Mr Barrie Dexter, and the Secretary elect, Mr David Hay, will spend four days in the Northern Territory next week at the invitation of Aboriginal communities.. :

From December .12 to 15 they will visit Yirrkala, Gove, Nhulunbuy, Groote Eylandt, Yuendumu, Darwin and Alice Springs. '

They will meet representatives of the Northern and Central Land Councils and Aboriginal communities to discuss the provisions of the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Bill. .

In Alice Springs Mr Viner and officers will discuss town leases with Aboriginal campers. In Darwin they will meet the Majority Leader in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly, Dr Goff Letts to discuss _ - complementary legislation to the Land Rights Bill. They will also meet

the Administrator of the Northern Territory, Mr John England. . . . · '

During the Minister’s visit to Groote Eylandt the bones of a man which were removed from a mission on the island some 45 years ago will be returned to his family. . ... : · · . · · ■

. The return of the bones was first sought in 1972 and late last yeai the Australian Institute of Aboriginal Studies traced them in Melbourne. .

Preparations have been under way for. some time on Groote Eylandt for the rites which will release the community from its obligations to the man. ..

Press conferences will be held in Darwin on' 14 December and on 15 December in Alice Springs.
