GOVERNMENT APPROVES ETJNDS FOR PURCHASE OF PIPPINGARRA STATION

(STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER FOR ABORIGINAL AFFAIRS, SENATOR J.L. CAVANAGH)

The Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Senator Cavanagh said

today that the Government had approved funds for negotiation by the

Western Australian Aboriginal Lands Trust for the purchase of

Pippingarra Station.

The Minister was cementing on statements in the Media

attributed to the owners.

Senator Cavanagh said that the property consisted of 176,000

acres adjacent to Port Hedland and had been offered for sale by the

Government on behalf of Aboriginals as far back as September 1972.

Senator Cavanagh said that he was not aware that negotiations

for the purchase of the property had yet been finalised.

The purchase has possibly been made by the West Australian

Aboriginal Lands Trust from money approved by the Australian Government

in accordance with advice given to the lands Trust as specified above.

He added that he had authorised negotiations for the purchase
