STUD? GROUP ON ABORIGINAL HEALTH

(Statement by the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs,

Senator J.L.Cavanagh)

The Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Senator J.L.Cavanagh,

said today that the Study Group on Aboriginal Health would hold its

second meeting in Perth from 13 to 15 November.

The Group, convened by Dr R.L. Kirk, Aboriginal Health

consultant to the Department of Aboriginal Affairs, includes medical

officers and health experts of Commonwealth, State and Northern

Territory Health Departments, as well as officers of the Department of

Aboriginal Affairs, and Aboriginals.

Senator Cavanagh said the main aim of the Study Group was to

prepare both urgent and long-term recommendations for- him on all matters

relating to the health of Aboriginals.

These recommendations would go to other ministers, as well as

form the basis for action by t he‘Department of Aboriginal Affairs.

The meeting would look in detail at two specific areas?

. Health manpower requirements and recruitment

. Local community involvement in Aboriginal

health programs.

. After a day of discussion and consideration of reports

in Perth, the group would fly to Derby on Wednesday and to Pitzroy

Crossing on Thursday to see at first hand health facilities, and the .

type of problems encountered in the Aboriginal Communities in Western ' μ*

Australia and the manner in which Western Australian Health Authorities

are tackling these problems.
