PRESS STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER FOR ABORIGINAL AFFAIRS

The Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, M r ,Gordon Bryant,

said today he had approved the refitting of the former Taiwanese

trawler "Yung Yuan 21" at Walkers Shipyard, Maryborough, North

Queensland. .

Mr Bryant said he had decided that Walkers Shipyard wasa

best suited to carry out the work following lengthy discussions with ■ ΛΙ

the Departments of Transport and Primary Industry about the extent of

the refit.

Walkers was ideally placed at Maryborough because the

refitted vessel will be used for a fishing co-operative under the

control of Torres Strait islanders. Also, he had received representa- 7I

tions from Mr Brendan Hansen, Member for Wide Bay.

Mr Bryant said work is expected to commence immediately

and he expected the vessel would quickly be available to the Islands

Co-operative.
