PARLIAMENT OF AUSTRALI A ■

MI NI STER FOR A B O R I G I N A L A FF AI RS

Parliament House, Canberra, A.C.T. 2600

STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER FOR ABORIGINAL AFFAIRS,

. MR. GORDON BRYANT

The Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Mr. Gordon Bryant,

said today he was disturbed and disappointed at reports that

a Sydney hotel was refusing to serve Aboriginal customers.

"I am taking this matter up with the responsible

New South Wales Minister and with the New South Wales

Licensing Court.

"It's true of course that many of the State Licensing

Acts allow the licensee to decide for himself who he will

serve.

"I only regret that there isn't as yet national

anti-discrimination legislation.

"I have been in contact with my colleague, the

Attorney-General about the drafting of such legislation.

It will be introduced in the next session of Parliament.

"Of course, this incident is not an isolated one.

"I have had a number of reports of incidents of

this sort from all over Australia."
