Parliament House, Canberra, A.C.T. 2600

STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER FOR ABORIGINAL AFFAIRS, '

MR GORDON BRYANT

VISIT TO CAIRNS

The Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Mr. Gordon Bryant, will

open a conference convened by the interim National Aboriginal

Consultative Committee in Cairns at 2.30 p.m. on Friday, June 22.

More than 300 Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders from

Queensland centres will attend the conference over the weekend

at the Young Australia League Building. .

The Conference has been arranged so that the Steering

Committee of the National Aboriginal Consultative Committee can

outline and discuss with Queensland Aborigines and Islanders the

draft plans to set up Aboriginal and Islander electorates around

Australia for the election of a fully representative consultative

body. The Steering Committee will seek endorsement of the principle

of Aboriginal and Islander electorates, and discuss the machinery

required for electoral rolls.

"This conference is another important step," Mr. Bryant

said, "in involving all Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders

in the setting up of an elected representative group to advise me

on what Aboriginal and Islander people really need, and how they

wish to see these needs fulfilled." ·

The National Aboriginal Consultative Committee has

arranged regional conferences in the States and Territories to

discuss plans for the elections.

Regional conferences have already been held in Darwin,

Perth, Kalgoorlie and Melbourne.
