STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER FOR ABORIGINAL AFFAIRS

MR. GORDON BRYANT

The Federal Government is to establish an Aboriginal

Land Fund to buy or acquire land outside reserves for

Aboriginal Communities. *

The Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Mr. Gordon Bryant,

said today Federal Cabinet had given approval for the

drafting of legislation to establish the fund.

The proposed scheme would enable Aboriginal communities

throughout Australia to have land for economic or social

purposes. ”

A half-baked proposal begun by the previous Government

required that the land be acquired by the Commonwealth.

The new scheme envisaged that the funds could be made

available to the communities so that title to land will be

vested in them.

Mr. Bryant said the balance of the $5 million provided

in 1972-73 in the Aboriginal Advancement Trust Account for

the purchase of properties would be paid into the fund which

would .allow for the expenditure of $5 million a year.
