STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER FOR ABORIGINAL AFFAIRS,

MR. GORDON BRYANT.

The Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Mr. Gordon

Bryant, said in Cairns today that he was arranging for an

interdepartmental team to be sent to the New South Wales

cotton growing centre of Wee Waa to report on working and

living conditions of itinerant cotton chippers„

He was arranging this with the Minister for

Labour, Mr. Clyde Cameron. He hoped the team would begin

its work next week.

Mr. Bryant said that soon after he and

Mr. Cameron had taken office they had ordered further

investigation into the conditions at Wee Waa.

The joint Labour/Aboriginal Affairs team

would look into the industrial situation and also the ■

examine /spending of part of a $50,00 grant to New South

Wales in 1972/73 which was earmarked for improving

facilities.
