AMALGAMATION OF ARMY, AIR FORCE AND SUPPLY PRINTING

' UNITS ^

(Statement by the Minister for Defence, the Hon. Allen . Fairhall, MP)

Amalgamation of the printing units of the Army, Air Force and Department of Supply in Melbourne was announced today by the Minister for Defence, Mr. Allen Fairhall.

The Department of Supply will run the amalgamated unit on a single-manager basis, with policy the responsibility of the Department of Defence.

This further step in the rationalisation of Defence activities would result in considerable savings. Greater production and increased efficiency would be possible in addition to capital equipment savings of over $350,000.

The units affected are the Army Base Printing Company, operating at Caulfield; the RAAF Printing and Publications Unit, Laverton, and the Reproduction Section of the Department of Supply Central Drawing Office, Maribyrnong.

All administrative and mechanical sections of the combined printing establishment will be centred at Brunswick, Victoria in premises being vacated by a clothing factory formerly operated by the Department of Supply. The new arrangements

are expected to be operating early in 1970.
