The next Chief of the Air Staff, RAAF, is to be Air Vice Marshal C. T. Hannah, C.B., C.3.E., at present Air Officer Commanding RAAF Support Command.

The appointment, which becomes effective on 1st January, 1970, was announced today by the Minister for Defence, Mr. Allen Fairhall.

Air Vice Marshal Hannah will be appointed Chief of the Air Staff for a three years term, and will be promoted to the rank of Air Marshal on taking up the appointment on 1st J anuary.

The appointment of Air Marshal Sir Alister Murdoch, K.B.E. C.B., who became Chief of the Air Staff on 1st June, 1965, has been extended for a second time. When he retires on 31st December next he will have been Chief of the Air Staff for more than four and a half years.

Sir Alister has been closely associated with a number of aspects of the present re-organisation of defence administration · arrangements, and for this' reason the Government has decided that it would be desirable to have the benefit of his advice and

extensive experience for a further period.


Air Vice Marshal C. T. Hannah (born 1914) joined the RAAF as an air cadet in January 1935, being appointed to a commission on 1st July, 1936. During his operational tour in the South West Pacific in World War 2, Air Vice Marshal Hannah was commanding officer of No.6 Squadron RAAF and subsequently of all RAAF units on Goodenough

Island. He has held important staff and command appointments, including commanding officer RAAF Amberley, and .Senior Air Staff Officer at Headquarters, Western Area, at RAAF Overseas Headquarters London and at Rear Echelon Headquarters Far East Air Force. Air Vice Marshal Hannah attended the Imperial Defence College course in 1955. He has subsequently filled the appointments of - Director General of Plans and Policy, Deputy Chief of the Air Staff and Air Officer Commanding Operational Command. He was appointed to his present post

of A.O.C Support Command in December, 1967. In 1957, Air Vice Marshal Hannah was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. In June, 1954, he was promoted to Commaider of that Order. He was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1959·
