RETENTION OF SERVICEWOMEN AFTER MARRIAGE '

(Statement by the Minister for Defence, the Hon. Allen Fairhall, MP)

Members of the Women’s Services and the Nursing Services

may now continue serving after marriage. ;

The Minister for Defence, Mr. Allen Fairhall, announcing

this today said that women who wished to continue in their

Services after marriage would be permitted to do so provided that

they were prepared to meet and they continued to meet the normal

Service requirements expected of women in the Services.

Broadly, the conditions of service for married service

women will be the same as those of unmarried servicewomen. They

will retain their contribution and retirement rights under the

Defence Forces Retirement Benefits Act. The commission of a

married officer may be extended and a married "other rank" may be

re-engaged in accordance with the rules for unmarried servipe-

women. The same conditions for discharge will apply except that

a married servicewoman will be eligible for discharge on request,

.and that the exigencies of Service life will preclude the continued

^service of a pregnant woman.
