STATEMENT BY THE HONOURABLE GORDON FREETH. MP. MINISTER FOR AIR

SENIOR RAAF APPOINTMENTS

Senior RAAF appointments announced today by the Minister for

Air, Mr Gordon Freeth, include the appointment of a new Officer Commanding

RAAF Base, Butterworth, Malaysia. ·

The appointments are:-

Air Commodore R.T. Susans, the present Director General of

Operational Requirements at Department of Air, Canberra, will become

Officer Commanding RAAF Base, Butterworth, Malaysia, from May 16th, 1969.

Air Commodore G.T. Newstead, the present Commander, RAAF Force,

South Vietnam, will become Director General, Operational Requirements, at

Department of Air, Canberra, from May 9th, 1969·

As previously announced Air Commodore F.S. Robey will succeed

Air Commodore Newstead as Commander RAAF Force, South Vietnam.

BIOGRAPHICAL DETAILS:

Air Cdre. Ronald Thomas Susans, DSO, DFC, was born at Sydney in 1917 and

enlisted in the RAAF in 1940. During World War 11 he was awarded a DFC for

his part in operations over enemy territory in the Middle East with No 3

Squadron. In 1952 he was awarded an immediate DSO for his outstanding

leadership of No 77 Squadron in Korea· He also received the American DFC and

Air Medal. Since the end of the Korean conflict he has held a number of

senior RAAF appointments, including Director of Air Staff Plans, Staff Officer

to Australian Joint Services Staff Washington, and Senior Air Staff Officer

at RAAF Base Edinburgh, Sth Australia. In recent years he has filled the

posts of Air Attache Paris and Officer Commanding RAAF Base Williamtown, NSW.

He was appointed Director General, Operational Requirements, Department of

Air, in July, 1966.

Air Cdre. Geoffrey Thompson Newstead, was born at Denmark, Sth Aust. in 1920

and enlisted in the RAAF as an air cadet in 1939· During World War 11 he

served in the south-west Pacific and later commanded a number of RAAF units,

including No 77 Squadron in Japan, No 78 Wing Headquarters in Malta, and No 6

Squadron at Amberley, Qld. At the end of 1963 he became the Assistant

Commandant of the RAAF Staff College at RaAF Base, Fairbairn, ACT. His staff

appointments have included Senior Air Staff Officer at Headquarters Western

Area, Staff Officer Recruiting at Headquarters Training Command and Acting

Director of Organisation at Department of Air. More recent appointments have

included Senior Operations Officer, Headquarters Far East Air Force, Singapore

and in April, 1968, Commander, RAAF Force, Vietnam.
