MINISTERIAL PRESS RELEASE

SUNDAY 26th MAY. 1968 RAAF PR S42O5/68

STATEMENT BY THE HONOURABLE GORDON FREETH, MP, MINISTER FOR AIR

RAAF TO GET AIR TRANSPORTABLE DENTAL UNITS

The RAAF's dental facilities will be supplemented

next year by the addition of two air transportable dental units.

The Minister for Air, Mr. Gordon Freeth, said today

that the RAAF has ordered the two air transportable units at a .

cost of about $15,000 each. The two units would augment existing

dental facilities at certain RiAF bases during periods of peak demands,

and provide adequate dental support for any long term deployment of

RAAF personnel.

Mr. Freeth said that the two air transportable dental

facilities, which initially would go to RAAF Base, Edinburgh, South

Australia, were expected to be in service in the RAAF by July of

next year.

The Minister said that the two all-metal units

contained the latest and most efficient type of dental equipment best

suited to meet the particular needs of the RAAF. Each unit, measuring

20-feet by 9ir-feet, would comprise a surgery and laboratory, and would

be easily transportable by RAAF Hercules aircraft. Locked to the floor

of the aircraft, they could be flown to any isolated locality at which

the RAAF was deployed, such as Tindal in the Northern Territory, or

larger RAAF bases such as Amberley in Queensland, and Darwin in the

Northern Territory. To become fully operative on arrival at their

destination they would only require connection to electricity and

water supply.

The units, he said, would be completely self contained and

would include such features as air conditioning, a console dental unit

which permits the dentist to operate in a standing or sitting position,

a high speed air bearing turbine drill, a horizontal posture dental

chair, compressed air for the surgery and laboratory? also X-ray

and a steam pressure sterilising unit. . .
