PRESIDENT NIXON'S ANNOUNCEMENT - STATEMENT- BY SENATOR

THE HON. Vo Co GAIR (LEADER. D.L.P).

President Nixon’s decision is not only a sound decision in 'his .

capacity as Commander—in—Chief of the American Forces but a courageous

decision as the Political Leader of his country»

For years the approach to American action in Vietnam has been .

bedevilled by political consideration. .

. ' ■ i

This had made the military operations extremely difficult but

despite that the Americans have proceeded along the path of Vietnamisation

of the conflict and the gradual withdrawal of American forces.. ,

The North Vietnamese Communists took, advantage of this, challenging

America to take the political risks associated with a response to the- new

Communist aggression in Cambodia. They never expected that the American

Government would have the courage, in the face of possible criticism,

to adopt the stand that has now been taken. . .

At this moment Australia would do well to recall the year 1942

when the Australian Government, under it's political leader, Labor Prime

Minister John Curtin, called thq Americans in aid when Australian lives ■ ■ · ■ ■

were t hreatened by aggression. The position is no w in reverse and it

w ou ld be hoped that a no less generous endorsement of the United' States

d ec is io n w ou ld come from the A ustralian Government in this situation, than

came from the American Government in 1942.
