APPOINTMENT OF AUSTRALIAN 'FORCE COMMANDER VIETNAM ' (Statement "by the Minister for Defence, the Hon. Malcolm Eraser, M.P.)

Brigadier D . B . Duns tan, CBS, has "been

appointed the next Commander of the Australian Forces

in Vietnam. .

In announcing this today the Minister for

Defence, Mr. Malcolm Fraser, said that Brigadier Dunstan

would "be promoted Major General (Temporarily) and would

relieve the present Commander, Major General Fraser, in

March 1971.

This will be Brigadier Dunstan1s second tour

of duty in Vietnam. During 1968 he served for twelve -

months as the Deputy Commander of the Army Task Force.

He was awarded the CBE in recognition of his service.

At present he is attending the Royal College

of Defence Studies (formerly the Imperial Defence College)

in the United Kingdom.

Biographical Notes; Brigadier D.B. Dunstan, CBB, graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon, in June 1942 and served with the Infantry Reinforcements and an Infantry Battalion until he joined the HQ 23 Infantry Brigade in August 1944. He served both in Japan with BCOF and in Korea where he was Military Assistant to the C-in-C British Commonwealth Forces. Since promotion to the rank

of Colonel he has commanded 1st Battalion RAR and the 1st Recruit Training Battalion, and was Deputy Commander of 1st Australian Task Force Vietnam. He was promoted Brigadier in March 1969 and was Commander 10th Force until going to the United Kingdom to attend the

Imperial Defence College.
