DEPLOYMENT OF AUSTRALIAN ARMY DETACHMENT .

FROM SINGAPORE. TO BUTTERWORTH

(Statement by the Minister for Defence, the Hon. Malcolm Fraser, M.P.)

. The commencement on 16th November of regular

deployments to Butterworth, in Malaysia of companies of

the Australian battalion based at Singapore (at present

1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment) was announced

today by Mr. Malcolm Fraser, Minister for Defence..

The Company will be accommodated at the

Butterworth Air Base and, as part of the overall programme

of Army training, will use the training areas and facilities

of Butterworth and its environs to vary and enhance their

own training and to develop further co-operation with the

Malaysian forces and elements of the Royal Australian Air

Force at Butterworth.

Mr. Fraser recalled that in his statement to

Parliament of 25th February, 1969, about the Government's

decision to retain forces in Malaysia and Singapore after

1971, the Prime Minister said that Australia planned to '

maintain, in conjunction with New Zealand, a two battalion

organization of ground troops based at Singapore with one

Company being detached in rotation to Butterworth except

on occasions when the whole force was training in Malaysia.
