PAY INCREASE FOR MEMBERS OF THE FORCES

(Statement "by the Minister for Defence, the Honourable Malcolm Fraser, M.P.)

Mr. Fraser said today that rates of pay for

officers and other ranks, both male and female, and junior

categories would be increased by 3 per cent to reflect the

recent decision of the Commonwealth Conciliation and

Arbitration Commission in the 1969 National Wage Case. In

addition, 5 cents per day would be added to marriage and

living-out allowances.

The increases will operate from 19th December,

1969. ' '

. Following a major review of the amount to be

included in the pay of Army other ranks having purely

military, as distinct from trades', skills, wide ranging

adjustments to the pay of soldiers are to be made said

M r . Eraser.

These adjustments will operate from the 10th

November, 1969, and are estimated to cost $1,630,000

annually. ■

Whereas formerly the highest military skill of

a soldier was graded in Group 9 under the Trades Grouping

system, it will now be in Group 19 carrying an increase of

S3.57 per day. As a soldier acquires a higher military

skill level he will advance to a higher pay group.
