PRESS STATEMENT BY SENATOR MICHAEL MACKLIN, AUSTRALIAN

DEMOCRAT SPOKESPERSON ON EDUCATION.

DEMOCRATS STOP FEES LEGISLATION

The Australian Democrats today reaffirmed their total

opposition to the reintroduction of tertiary fees for

second and higher degrees, by stopping the passage of the

Government's legislation through the Senate for the

second time. .

Senator Michael Macklin, Australian Democrat spokesperson...

on Education, said: " Education is a right, not a privilege.,

dependent on financial means. The Government's attempt

to reintroduce tertiary fees illustrates its lack of

commitment to social justice and its short-sightedness

in respect of the future prosperity of this nation."

"This legislation would have eroded further Australia's

already limited research capacity, robbing the community

of the benefits of technological and social research, and

denied many people their right to an education commensurate

with their inclinations and abilities."

"In order to effectively meet the demands of the future,

Australia needs to invest in education and provide more

monetary encouragement to students, rather than raising

increasing financial obstacles to further study and research.

We need a much heavier investment in human capital, such

as in the field of education, to ensure future prosperity

and development for Australia." Canberra 17/5/82
