STATEMENT BY THE TREASURER, THE HON JOHN HOWARD, MP. .

DEPUTY MANAGING DIRECTOR, COMMONWEALTH BANKING CORPORATION GENERAL MANAGER, COMMONWEALTH TRADING BANK OF AUSTRALIA.

His Excellency the Administrator in Council has appointed Mr S.P. Kelly,

DFC as Deputy Managing Director of the Commonwealth Banking Corporation

with effect from 15 August 1981. He will succeed Mr V.T. Christie, who

takes up his appointment as Managing Director from.that date. His

Excellency has also appointed Mr W.H. Clark, OBE to succeed Mr Kelly as

General Manager of the Commonwealth Trading Bank of Australia.

Mr Kelly who is aged 62 years, joined the Commonwealth Bank of Australia

in 1937 and since then has served with that Bank and its successor, the

Commonwealth Banking Corporation. He has had wide experience in

Australian and international banking. Mr Kelly has been General Manager

of the Commonwealth Trading Bank since September 1978 and, prior to

that, he had been Chief Manager, Victoria of the Commonwealth Banking

Corporation (and an Assistant General Manager of the Commonwealth

Trading Bank) for 6 years. From 1970 to 1972 he was an Assistant

General Manager of the Commonwealth Savings Bank and from 1968 to 1970

Chief Manager of the Corporation's office in London.

Mr Clark, who will be aged 53 years when he takes up his appointment has

had wide experience in banking both in Australia and Papua New Guinea.

In 1974 he was seconded by the Corporation to take up the position of ^ ■ ' '

Managing Director of the new Papua New Guinea Banking Corporation, which

had as its nucleus the business then being conducted in Papua New Guinea

by the various elements of the Commonwealth Banking Corporation. In

T-978 he was appointed to the position of Manager of the CTB's Sydney

branch, its most important branch banking operation.

Mr Kelly’s appointment will expire on 22 March 1984 (the day before his

65th birthday) and Mr Clark's appointment is for a term of seven years

commencing on 15 August 1981.
