The Attorney-General, Senator Lionel Murphy, Q.C. ,

today appointed the seven members of the Australian

Criminology Research Council.

. The inaugural meeting of the Council will be held

in Melbourne tomorrow morning.

The Council is a Commonwealth-State body which will

allocate funds for criminological research projects. The

Council will allocate an-initial amount of $ 1 0 0 ,0 0 0 , half

of which will be contributed by the Commonwealth and the

remainder by the States, calculated on a population basis.

The members of the Council are:­

, Mr E.J. Mahony, Deputy Secretary, Attorney-General*s

Department, representing the Commonwealth

.'Mr L.K. Downs, Under Secretary of Justice, representing

New South Wales ·

. Mr A.G. Booth, Director-General of Social Welfare,

representing Victoria .

. Mr Γ.Ν. Albietz, Legal Administrative Officer, Department

of Justice, Queensland -

. Miss M.C. Doyle, Senior Legal Officer, Attorney-General * s

Department, South Australia

. Mr R. McG. Christie, Assistant Under Secretary for Law,

Crown Law Department, Western Australia

. Dr E. Cunningham Dax, Co-ordinator in Community Health

The Criminology Research Council was established

to utilise fully the present research facilities already

available in Australia, There are experts in a variety of

disciplines in both universities and Government departments

whose services might be made available for specific research

projects in criminology, . - . . .

The priorities and the appropriate bodies to undertake

these research projects will be decided by the Council.

At tomorrow's meeting, the Council will appoint a

chairman and determine what future procedures will be

•followed. It will examine the relative importance and

urgency of research projects and will also appoint members

to the Board of Management of the Australian Institute of

Criminology. .
