STATEMENT BY THE COMMISSIONER OP COMMONWEALTH POLICE,

MR J.M. DAVIS

Commonwealth and State police investigating allegations

of extremist activity in the Yugoslav community in Australia

today searched a number of premises in New South Wales and

Victoria,

A quantity of documents and other material was seized

during the searches and the significance of this material

is at present being assessed. ' . .

For some considerable time, police have been investigating allegations of extremist activity within the Yugoslav community,

in Australia. In addition, information relating to recent alleged terrorist activities in Europe was passed to the ■

Minister for Foreign Affairs by the Yugoslav Ambassador last week

The searches today were carried out on warrants with a

view to obtaining evidence of the possible commission of

offences under Section 30 C (b) of the Commonwealth Crimes

Act. This section makes it an offence to advocate by speech

or writing the violent overthrow of an established government.

Inquiries are still proceeding but because of the quantity

of documents seized today and the fact that most of them will

have to be translated, it will be a considerable time before

a.n accurate assessment can be made.
