STATEMENT BY THE COMMON¥EALTH ATTORNEY-GENERAL.

SENATOR IVOR J. GREENWOOD, Q.C.

The Commonwealth Government is calling for

applications for the appointment of the Director of the

newly-established Australian Institute of Criminology.

The position of Director, which carries an annual

salary of $15>370, will be advertised nationally this weekend.

Applications are being sought from people who are qualified

in law, the social sciences or other related disciplines.

The Institute, to be situated in Canberra, is part

of a joint Commonwealth-State project to establish facilities

on a national level for the promotion and conduct of

criminological research. The Institute will also be engaged

in conducting seminars and training courses for people working

in the field of prevention or correction of criminal behaviour.

As well as conducting research on a national level

itself, the Institute will act as a secretariat for the

Criminology Research Council, a body which will allocate funds

for criminology research projects throughout Australia. The

funds for this research will come from the Criminology Research

fund, contributed to by the Commonwealth and the States.

The Director will hold a statutory appointment and

will be responsible for managing the affairs of the Institute,

subject to the general direction of the Institute's Board of

Management. Representatives of the Commonwealth and the States

will sit on the Board of Management.
