• 1*«M.R. BUILDING CONTRACT LET

(Statement "by the Minister* for the Interior and Works, M r 0 Preeth),

The Minister for the Interior and Works, Mr0 Gordon

Freeth, announced today that a £1,620,000 contract had been

let "by the National Capital Development Commission fo r '

construction of an office "block for the Bureau of Mineral

Resources in Canberra,

The contract was let to Concrete Constructions

(Canberra) Ety, Ltda

Mr, Freeth said the building, to be" erected on

Constitution Avenue and flanking the eastern side of Anzac

Parade, would become the headquarters for geological research

and surveys in Australia,

The building would provide normal office space to

accommodate the staff of the Bureau of Mineral Resources, at

present about 600, who were working in temporary and rented

premises in Canberra and Melbourne, It would also include a

technical library, laboratories and workshops,

M r , Freeth said the building would be built in two

stages,, A; six storejr wing running parallel to Anzac Parade

would be completed by the end of next year and a five storey

wing running parallel to Constitution Avenue by the middle of

1965»

T-he building would be of reinforced concrete construction

with sandstone facing and precast infill panels. It was the

first of a complex of buildings tqe National Capital Development

Commission planned to erect between Constitution- Avenue and

Parkes Way®

Mr® Freeth said the Commission planned another office

block of similar outline and mass for thee western side of

Anzac Parade, .

The two buildings "would ultimately form a portal which

would help frame the view along the central axis of the

Canberra Plan® *

Consultant architects to the Commission for the design

of this building are the Commonwealth Department of Works,

Canberra, .
