Opening new Coastal. Radio Station at McLaren Vale, South Australia.

Statement by the Postmaster-General (Hon. C. W. Davidson)

A non Coastal Radio Station will he opened tomorrow at

McLaren Vale, about 25 miles from Adelaide. '

The Postmaster-General (Mr. Davidson) said today that the new

Station would replace an existing Station at Rosewater.

The Minister said that the Coastal Radio Service, which was

operated by the Overseas Telecommunications Commission, provided

communication and safety services for ships at sea. Stations were

provided at a number of locations along Australia’s coastline. .

. ■ As part of a progressive and planned improvement of the

service to meet present day conditions, a number of Stations had to he

relocated as well as modernised owing to increased industrial activity

and greater electrical noise in the areas' in which they operated.

Centres requiring new installations included Townsville,

Brisbane and Hobart, the Minister said. '

The new Station at McLaren Vale will be officially opened

tomorrow by the Chairman of the Overseas Telecommunications Commission

(Australia), Sir Giles Chippindali.
