Statement by the Minister for Works, Mr, G. Freeth,

The Minister for Works, Mr.· Freeth, announced today that

a £212,177 contract for the erection of the Australian Broadcasting

Commission's· television and sound broadcasting studios in Canberra

had been let to A.C.T. Builders Pty. Ltd.

They vail be built on the corner of Ncrthboume and

Wakefield avenues and are expected to be completed by about the

end of March next year. · "

The two sound studios will be contained in a single

storey octagonal-shaped building, rising from a freestone base

in front of the television studio building. This building will

have a pre-cast exposed aggregated exterior, aluminium window

frames and a copper roof. It will also house administrative offices

A studio 50ft. long by 30 ft. wide will be housed in the

three~stoy*y television building which will be fully equipped for

the production of all local programmes, ^t will also contqin

s c e n e s workshops, technical control areas and an administration

section. The walls and external finish will be similar to the

broadcasting building. Both buildings will be linked by a

covered way. . .

Mr. Freeth said that the complex requirements of ·

broadcasting and television had called for careful planning of

the exteriors_ and interiors of both buildings,·;··They would both- .

be fully air-conditioned to provide essential working conditions,

, The project was designed by the Commonwealth Department

of Works and provision has been made for future expansion when '

required. . '
