The selection of Captains for two Australian anti-submarine

frigates was announced today by the Minister for the Navy,

Senator Gorton.

The first commanding officer for the new frigate,

H.M.A.S. STUART, will be Commander M.L. Molony, of Canberra. The

Superintendent of the Royal Australian Navy's Experimental

Laboratory in Sydney, Commander N.A. Boase, is to take command

of a sister ship, H.M.A.S. YARRA.

STUART, built at Cockatoo Island Dockyard in Sydney, is

at present undergoing sea trials, and Commander Molony will

formally take commander next year.

. Commander Molony is an anti-submarine warfare specialist,

and has had experience in this field in Britain and America.

He is a former Naval Director of the Australian Joint Anti-Submarine

School at Nowra, and is at present serving in Canberra as

Director of Tactics, Trials and Staff Requirements.

He entered the Royal Australian Naval College from

Melbourne in 1937* ■

Commander Boase will be the second Captain for YARRA,

which joined the Fleet last year. He takes command from

Commander J.L.W. Merson, who has been appointed to Navy Office

in Canberra. ,

Commander Boase is also an anti-submarine specialist,

and is a former Officer-in-Charge of the R.A.N.'s Torpedo and

Anti-Submarine School in Sydney. Before taking up his present

appointment at the Experimental Laboratory, he was Captain of

the cadet training ship, H.M.A.S. SWAN. He entered the Naval

College in 1938.
