. PUBLIC cm AVERT TRAGIC DEATHS' '

Statement by the Minister for the Army. . · '

the Hon. J .0♦Cramer '

More ana more dangerous wartime souvenirs were Being recovered from

public sources, the Minister for the Army,, Mr J. 0. Cramer, said today.

Recent figures issued by Array Ordnance experts showed that during the

period July-Septembc-r, the number cf ammunition items recovered had increased' by

nearly 5,000 over the previous three months.

All but 164 of these were "live" items, capable of killing or mutilating"·

anyone who handled them carelessly.

Although both Police and Army experts continued to emphasise the risk of

retaining these old wartime souvenirs in the homo, end particularly of handling

them, in their new deteriorated and dangerous condition, tragic accidents still

happened. . . ■ ■

V/hile public response in bringing these old souvenirs forward was .

encouraging, it was strongly eaphasised that people should not deliver them to .

Army or Police authorities, but advise where the items could be collected and

removed by experts. .

It should be impressed on children in particular, that if they found

ammunition discarded on vacant allotments, or on old wartime firing ranges, they · ·

must never pick up or handle the items, but immediately warn their parents.

This basic safety precaution should be taught to older children,■who were

oftep responsible for the safety and welfare of their smaller brothers and sisters.

' Of the 10,494 items recovered during the review period, over 8,000 were ' ' S- . \ ■

small arms ammunition ranging from 9 mm to 20 mm in calibre.

' The larger items included mortar bombs, aerial practice bombs, grenades,

- · s- .

high explosive shells, gelignite and signal flares. Many were in a highly sensitive

and dangerous condition. ' ·

Included were: . .

. . A high explosive, fused 25 pounder shell - found in a garbage can. .

' o 65 hand-grenades, all in a dangerous condition.

. A 40-millimetre high-explosive shell, which showed signs o f 'tampering.
