Press Statement "by the Commonwealth Minister for Health, Senator the Hon. Harrie W. Wade

Legislation providing· for substantial increases in

Commonwealth "benefits to contributors under the Medical Benefits

Scheme would be introduced in the First Session of the new

Parliament.

The Minister for Health, Senator Wade, said this to-day.

Senator Wade said that, following the Prime Minister's

announcement of the Government's intention to increase Commonwealth

medical benefit payments by £4 million a year, his Department had

been pressing on with all speed to complete the revision of the

benefit Schedules. ■

The Schedules would be extended to cover more than 1000

medical services.

The increased benefits would be available to all persons

who are contributors to registered medical benefit organisations

without the necessity to pay increased contributions to those

. organisations. ,

Senator Wade said that the increased benefits would

substantially reduce the proportion of doctors' fees which a

contributor was obliged to meet from his own pocket.

This would be a distinct advancement in the National Health

Scheme which is already regarded as among the best in the world,

said Senator Wade.
