, R.A.N. FRIGATE SOLD'. TO NEW ZEALAND

Statement "by the Minister for Defence, The Hon* Athol . Townley

The former Australian survey frigate, H.M.A.S. LACHLAN,

has "been sold to the Royal New Zealand Navy. ·

The Minister for Defence, the 9on. Athol Townley,

who announced the sale today, said LACHLAN had "been serving

with the New Zealand Navy for the past 14 years. She was

loaned to New Zealand in 1949 when she was a"bout to "be paid-

off into the R.A.N, reserve.

Mr. lownley said that LACHLAN was now eighteen years

old and had no future role in the R.A.N. She had "been sold

to New Zealand for £20,000 which would "be her value· if

disposed of in the normal way. .

H.M.A.S. LACHLAN, a River Class frigate, was "built "by

Morts Dock, Sydney, and commissioner in February, 1945»

During the next eight months she steamed 21,000 miles making

a significant contribution to the final stages of the Pacific

War.

LACHLAN, attached to a United States Navy hydro-graphic

group, took part in the Mindanao operations in the Southern

Philippines, and helped clear the way for the assuit on

Tarakan and the landings at Brunei Bay, : ■

During 1946-47? LACHLAN played a part in Australia’s extensive post-war survey programme. '
