REVIEW OF ALLOWANCES PAID TO HOLDERS OF COMMONWEALTH

UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS

Senator Gorton, the Minister in Charge of Commonwealth

Activities in Education and Research has announced increases

in allowances; payable to students under the Commonwealth scholar

ship scheme for undergraduates, and relaxation in the means test

applied to the income of the student’s family.

Senator ^orton said that the present scale of allowances

had been in operation since early 1962 and in the review account

had been taken of general movements in costs and wages in the

meantime. ■

The maximum allowance to a student living at home is to be

increased from £247 to. £260 a year, i.e. an increase of 5/~ per

week to give a weekly allowance of £5 . In the case of an inde­

pendent student or of a student living away from home, the

maximum allowance will also be increased by 5/- per week to

£?·12. 6d per week, or to £396.10.Od a year. .

The allowance for a dependant wife will be raised by 5/­

per week to £1 .1 9 .Od per week.

The level of annual family income at which maximum allowan­

ces are paid will be increased from £830 to £1,000 and other

allowances will be adjusted accordingly.

Senator Norton said that these changes will increase living

allowance benefits to students at present receiving them and

extend the allowance to some students who did not qualify for

them under the old arrangement.

The new rates will be effective from January 1 st, 1 9 6 5 *
