Statement by the Minister for Defence, the Hon, Athol Townley, --------------- M. p.

The Minister for Defence, Mr, Townley, announced the

selection of Commander R,E. BOURKE, R.a .N,, to attend the

February 1961 Course at the United States Armed Forces Staff

College at Norfolk, Virginia, Commander BOURKE is currently

serving as Executive Officer at the Royal Australian Naval College

(H.M.xi.S. CRESV/ELL) at Jervis Bay, Mr. Townley added that

arrangements were concluded with the United States Government

in 1954 for the admission of selected Australian Service officers

to the College and since then, officers of the three Services

have regularly attended the Courses which are held twice yearly.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

Commander BOURKE entered the Royal Australian Naval College

in 1938 and during the 1939-45 war, he served in H,M«a .S. AUSTRALIA

and H.M.S, REDPOLE, During 1945-46 he completed flying training

at Naval Air Stations in the United Kingdom and was subsequently

engaged on flying duties aboard Royal Navy Aircraft carriers.

His subsequent appointments include Command of 805 Squadron

(1955-5 6 ), Flight Deck Officer and Lieutenant-Commander, Flying

H.M.A.S. MELBOURNE (1957-58), Command of H.M.a .S. COOTa MUNDRa

(1958-59), and Executive Officer, H.M.a .S, CRESWELL (Since

January, 1959),
