No. 1082.

Australian prestige was very high in the Middle West

of the United States, Mr. E.E. Jarvis, Australian Trade '

Commissioner to Chicago during the past "three years, said i

today. Mr. Jarvis returned to Sydney today for leave before

reposting. /

The earlier isolationism of the Midwest had now

disappeared and American businessmen and the public welcomed

greater two-way trade with Australia and saw this as an area

for mutually beneficial investment. ·

• Our export trade in such commodities as meat /"lobster

tails and kangaroo leather, continued to expand while new items

were being actively pursued with some success. Early this year,

Australia delivered a first order for worsted fabric to a major

men's clothing manufacturer and this could well be just the ‘

forerunner of a valuable business in.wool products to the area.

Major Chicago companies such as Peabody Coal Co.,

James B . Clow and Sons Inc., Quaker Oats Co., Pillsbury Co.

and others have exemplified their confidence in the Australian

economy by developing strong working arrangements in Australia,

over a diverse field of industry. , ·

• ‘ Mr. Jarvis said the Midwest market, like most of the

U.S.A., was a high cost and highly selective area, but Australian

goods designed to meet requirements would find expanding

sales into and through Chicago. . /
