ADDITIONAL MEMBER FOR THE INTERIM COUNCIL

OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PAPUA AND NEW GUINEA

(Statement by the Minister for Territories, the Hon. C. E. Barnes)

Professor 0. Η. K. Spate, Professor of

Geography in the Research School of Pacific Studies .of

the Australian National University, has been appointed

to the Interim Council of the University of Papua and

New Guinea, the Minister for Territories, Mr C. E. Barnes,

said to-day. .

Professor Spate has had wide experience of under­

developed countries, particularly in South-East Asia.

During 1963 and 1964 he was a member of the three-man

Currie Commission which reported on higher education in

Papua and New Guinea, and recommended the earliest possible

establishment of a University. He has returned from

overseas only last week.

Professor Spate's appointment brings the member­

ship of the Council to 14, and increases the number holding

high academic appointments in Australian Universities to

five.
