LIMITED SUBSCRIBER TRUNK DIALLING FACILITIES

Statement "by the Postmaster-General, The Hon. Alan S. Hulme

Limited subscriber trunk dialling facilities from Brisbane

and Ipswich to Sydney, Rockhampton, Townsville, Cairns, the Gold

Coast (including Tweed Heads) and Lismore will be introduced

early in April.

Announcing this to-day, the Postmaster-General,

Mr. Alan Hulme,said that the facility initially would be

available to 80 per cent of Brisbane subscribers and those

at Ipswich whose telephone numbers were prefixed by 81 and

JIWM. . '

Mr. Hulme said that equipment modifications or replacement

at several exchanges would be required before all Brisbane

subscribers could have direct dialling facilities.

Prior to the introduction of the new service, the Post Office

would conduct a publicity campaign to explain the operation of

S.T.D. and its economic advantages.

The Minister added that by 1975? the Post Office expected

that 66 per cent of all trunk calls in Australia would be

subscriber dialled.
