Statement "by the Postmaster-General, The Hon. Alan S. Hulme

Four country areas - three In New South Wales and one in

Queensland would receive "better quality television shortly,

the Postmaster-General, Mr. Alan Hulme, announced today.

The areas are GLEN INNES, GOULBURN and WALCHA in New South

Wales and MONTO in Queensland.

Mr. Hulme said that the Australian Broadcasting Control

Board, in an examination of the quality of television service

in these towns, had recommended the establishment of translator


Both National and Commercial translators would "be

established, the Minister said. On the Board's recommendation,

the Commercial stations would be established by :-Goulburn - Canberra Television Ltd., (Licensee of

Commercial Television Station C.T.C. Canberra.)

Glen Innes - Television New. England Ltd., (Licensee of

Commercial Television Station Nen Upper Namoi)

Waleha Television. -liew England Ltd.

(Investigations are still proceeding in connection with the

provision of a commercial translator service for Monto).

Mr. Hulme said that the Boards recommendations had been

made following a detailed investigation into the requirements

of each area including consideration of the community of

interest between the area to be. served and the primary service

areas of the commercial television stations seeking the grant

of a licence. The investigations included "on the spot"

examinations by two members of the Board who interviewed

representatives of local bodies, and residents generally. "
