Two courts martial are to be convened in Singapore

next week as a result of the grounding of the RAN destroyer

escort HMAS PARRAMATTA on a rock in the. Malacca Strait area

off the west coast of Malaya on November 4.

The officers to be charged are the captain of

PARRAMATTA, Commander J . A. Matthew, RAN, and the ship's

navigating officer, L t . D.B. Chalmers, RAN,

The courts are being■convened by the Flag Officer

Commanding the Royal Navy's Far East Fleet who has operational

command of the ship while it is serving in the British Commonwealth

Strategic Reserve and who ordered a Board of Enquiry into '

the incident to be conducted, ■

An RAN officer will be a member of each court and

RAN officers will be Prosecutor, assistant prosecutor and defence

counsel. ·
