STATEMENT BY THE HON F.M. OSBORNE, MINISTER FOR AIR • NOT FOR RELEASE BEFORE 5PM ON SUNDAY, NOVEMBER'S, 1959

An old English custom will be revived in relation to the

youngest of the services on November 22 when members of the RAAF Base

at East Sale, Victoria, will be granted freedom of entry to the City of

Sale at a ceremonial parade in the city. This ceremony dates back

to the days when regiments in England could not enter cities without

permission.

A special squadron of 200 men, representing all sections of the

RAAF at East Sale, would take nart in the ceremony to mark the occasion,

Mr. F.M. Osborne, Minister for Air, said in Canberra today.

The decision to extend the offer to the RAAF has been made

by the Sale City Council as a gesture of goodwill and appreciation of the

RAAF men and their families who live and work in the proximity of the

city.

"It is commonplace, both in Australia and overseas, for local

authorities to complain about noise from aircraft operations. This is '

particularly so in Britain and the United States, where many aircraft operate

from huge bases," said Mr, Osborne.

"Every Air Force base does its best to keep this nuisance to a

minimum, but the very noise which is heard by day or by night is a symbol

of the work which the men are doing in the nation's interests,

"Sale has shown a commendable appreciation of the social and

economic co-operation which the proximity of the RAAF means to it."

' At the ceremony in Sale on November 22 the Town Clerk,

Mr. J. R. Ray, will read a scroll, and the Mayor, Councillor W, Steahenson,

will ask Group Captain E.G. Fyfe, DSC, Officer Commanding the RAAF Base,

to accept it on behalf of the RAAF.

. The Mayor will review the contingentof RAAF oersonnel and the men

will march to the Memorial Hall, where they will be entertained by the

citizens of the city.
