REVIEW OE THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION·, END-NOVEMBER 1967

seek in g t h e i r f i r s t employment and r e g i s t r a t i o n o f s e a s o n a l

workers from th e s u g a r and meat i n d u s t r i e s i n Queensland. ■ This

y e a r th e numbers r e g i s t e r e d i n c r e a s e d by 14,388 (8,154 m ales and

6,234 f e m a l e s ) to a t o t a l of 63,022 a t 1 s t December. J u n i o r s

( i n c l u d in g school l e a v e r s ) accounted f o r 12,859, or 90$ o f th e

t o t a l r i s e " . The M i n i s t e r f o r Labour and N a tio n a l S e r v i c e , Mr

L e s li e Bury, s a i d t h i s to d ay when r e l e a s i n g h i s D e p a rtm e n t's

m onthly employment s t a t i s t i c s .

Mr Bury s a i d t h a t th e r i s e i n th e number o f r e g i s ­

t r a n t s was h ig h e r th an u s u a l f o r November. However a v e ry

s a t i s f a c t o r y f e a t u r e was th e r a t e a t which p erso n s were p la c e d

i n employment d u rin g th e month. T his r a t e , which av erag ed

8,412 a week, was exceeded only once b e f o r e i n November, i n 1963·

Mr Bury added t h a t u n f i l l e d v a c a n c ie s i n c r e a s e d by

3,050 to a t o t a l of 41,370 a t 1st December, made up o f 27,792

f o r m ales and 13,578 f o r f e m a le s .

O ther f e a t u r e s of l a s t m o n th 's s t a t i s t i c s m entioned
