Statement by Senator the Honourable J.G. Gorton Minister for Education and Science

EXCHANGE OF TEACHERS COLLEGE LECTURERS WITH NEW ZEALAND

■ The Minister for Education and Science, Senator J.G.

Gorton, today announced the establishment of a. scheme for the

exchange of teachers college lecturers with New Zealand, beginning

in 1968. One New Zealand lecturer will be brought to Australia each year to take up an appointment in an Australian teachers

college. The lecturer's salary will be paid by the education

authority in Australia receiving him and will be at a rate

appropriate for a person of his experience and qualifications.

The Commonwealth Government under its scheme of Co-operation in .

Education with Commonwealth Countries will provide fares and

some other expenses.

New Zealand will make reciprocal arrangements under

which an.Australian lecturer will be invited to join the staff

of a New Zealand, teachers college for a year.

Senator Gorton said that he hoped to be able to

announce early next year the name of the lecturer from each

country and the college to which each would be attached. . ■
