COMMONWEALTH PACIFIC TELEPHONE CABLE

Statement.by the Postmaster-General (Hon. Alan S. Hulme, M.P.)

The Postmaster-General, Mr. Alan Hulme, said today that the

Commonwealth Pacific Telephone Cable (COMPAC) between Australia, New

Zealand, Canada and Britain and serving also the Americas and Europe,

would be taken out of service tomorrow (Sunday) between, noon and 3 p.m.

(Eastern Australian Time) for routine testing.

He said that alternative systems would be used to handle all

telecommunications traffic during the period the cable was. under test.

.Telephone callers to overseas countries served by the cable would,

however, be given the option of taking their calls over the alternative

radio telephone system or waiting until the cable was restored to

service.

The Minister added that the cable was taken out of service

from time to time for routine tests.
