Church services, displays and the ceremonial

dressing of ships and establishments next week will commemorate

the anniversary of the arrival of the first RAN ships in Sydney

Harbour on October 4, 1913°

October 4 has been officially recognised as Navy Day,

. Ships "in port in Melbourne and Sydney will be open

for inspection on October 9 and several shore establishments in

Victoria, NSW and WA' will also be open to the public, ■

In New South Wales the first Navy Week function will be the open

inspection on Saturday. (Oct. 2) of sea cadet training ships

Condamine at Manly; Parramatta at Parramatta North; Shropshire at

Canterbury; Warrego at Woolwich; Sirius at Arncliffe.; and Sydney on

Snapper Island.

On Monday (Oct. 4) all ships and establishments will

"be dressed with flags. .

The Navy Band will play in Hyde·Park at lunchtime on

Tuesday, and Wednesday, in the Town Hall on Thursday and at the

Saluting Base at the Town Hall for the Waratah Festival from 12.15

to 1.30 p.m. on Saturday. -

Garden Island will be open for inspection from 1.30

to 5 p.m. on Saturday and HMAS MELBOURNE, HMAS SUPPLY and HMAS ANZAc

will be open to the public. ·

' There will be displays by divers, helicopters and the

Navy Band. ·

On Sunday (Oct. 10) commemorative church services will

be held at St. Mary's Cathedral at Ί0 a.m. and at St. Andrew's

Cathedral at 11 a.m.

The Lieutenant Governor (Sir Kenneth Street) will

attend the St. Andrew's service.

Arrangements have been made for special church services

at Wollongong on October 10.

At Newcastle on Thursday (Oct. 7) lunch hour crowds will

be entertained by a demonstration of sea-air rescue by a team of

divers from HMAS RUSHCUTTER who will be "rescued" from Newcastle

harbour by a RAN Irequois helicopter.

On Sunday (Oct 10) the Navalmen's Association and sea

cadets will march along Civic Street to Civic Park where a

commemorative service will be held.

In Victoria the Minister for the Navy (Mr. F.C. Chaney) will visit

HMAS CERBERUS, Flinders Naval Depot, Crib Point on Monday — Navy

Day. ' All ships and establishments will be dressed with flags.

• - The_Navy Band will play at the National Gallery on

Tuesday (Oct. 5) in the Treasury Gardens on Wednesday, at the ,

National Mutu&l Centre on Thursday and at HMAS CERBERUS, Flinders

Naval Depot, Crib Point, on Saturday.

On Saturday (Oct 9) both HMAS CERBERUS, the Williamstown

Naval Dockyard and RAN escorts, at present at Williamstown, will be

open for inspection.

Displays including sport, judo, gymnastics and training

have been organised <^or HMAS CERBERUS during the inspection.

On Sunday (Oct.'10) the Governor (Sir Rohan Delacombe)

will attend a seafarer's service at.St. Paul's Anglican cathedral

at 11 a.m. A similar service will be held at the same time .at St.

Patrick's Roman Catholic Cathedral.

At 1.30 p.m. serving members of the RAN and ex-service

personnel will march to the Shrine of Remembrance. A total of

about 600 sailors will take part.

A service will be held at the Shrine at 2.p.m. The

Governor will attend.

In Brisbane the Naval Shore establishment, HMAS MORETON, will be

dressed with flags on Monday (Oct 4).

A Navy League dinner will be held at the establishment on

Friday (Oct 8) at which the Third Naval Member on the Naval Board

(Rear Admiral F.L. George) will speak.

Former Wrans will hold a reception at HMAS MORETON on

October 9·

On Sunday (Oct 10) a seafarers' service will be held at

St. John's Anglican Cathedral and a special naval service at the

St. John's Roman Catholic Church, Northgate, --- the Naval Church. ■

In South Australia a ceremony will be held at the National War

Memorial on Navy Day (Oct. 4).

. Navy Church services are planned.for 11 a.m. at both

St. Peter’s Anglican Cathedral and at St^...Xa-vier-rs Roman Catholic

Cathedral. - · . -

. - · - ■ "" At Renmark, the Naval Association Sub-Branch will stage

a reunion and dinner on Saturday night (Oct 9)·

In Darwin a formal dinner party will be held on Thursday (Oct 7)

by the Administrator (Mr. Roger Nott) for senior RAN officers and . 1

their wives. .

On Friday a formal dinner will be held for all ex-naval

personnel in the area and on Sunday (Oct 10) ceremonial divisions

and march past will be reviewed by the Administrator.

Church services will also be held.

In Western Australia a Naval race meeting at Belmont Park will be

held on (Oct. 2) and Church parades and special services will be

held on Sunday (Oct 3).at 11 a.m. at the Anglican and Catholic


A formal dinner will be held at HMAS LEEUWIN on Navy Day

(Oct. 4) and it is expected that 500 ex-Nava1 men will attend. On

Sunday afternoon (Oct 10) HMAS LEEUWIN will be open to the public

for three hours when Junior Recruits will demonstrate all aspects

of their training. .

In Tasmania an Open Day will be held at HMAS HUON, Hobart, on

October 9. This will be followed by a Naval Association dinner

On Sunday (Oct 10) a wreath laying ceremony will be held at the

Hobart Cenotaph and a special church service will be held at

St. Georges Church, Hobart.
