TRADE AGREEMENT SIGNED BETWEEN

AUSTRALIA AND THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA

( Statement by the Acting Minister for Trade and Industry, The Hon. Paul Hasluck)

The Acting Minister for Trade and Industry, Mr. Paul Hasluck,

announced today .the signing in Seoul of a trade agreement between

Australia and Korea.

Mr. Hasluck said he welcomed the signing of the Agreement

which was the first formal trade treaty between the two countries and

marked a further step in the development of closer relations between

Australia and her trading partners in Asia.

The Australian Ambassador to Korea, Mr. R.A. Peachey,

signed the Agreement on behalf of the Australian Government.

Mr. Lee Dong Won, the Korean Minister for Foreign Affairs,

signed for the Korean Government.

Mr. Hasluck said that the Agreement guaranteed each country

the right of most-favoured-nation access to the market of the other.

Although both countries had been getting most-favoured-nation

treatment in practice, there had previously been no assurance that

this would continue. Korea was not a member of G.A.T.T. and the

Agreement established formal trade relationships between the two

countries.

The Agreement also recorded the support of both

Governments to the principle of international action designed to

improve the conditions of international trade in primary

products.

Australia's exports to Korea were mainly wool, wheat,

sugar and coal and were valued at about £2j- million in 1964-/65»

Trade between Australia and Korea had been growing in recent

years, Mr. Hasluck said, and the new Agreement should encourage

closer relations and the further growth of trade to the mutual

benefit of both countries
