The Minister-in-Charge of Commonwealth Activities in

Education and Research, Senator J.G. Gorton, tonight released

details of Commonwealth secondary and technical scholarships

available to South Australian students from the "beginning of

19o6c Last Thursday the South Australian Minister for

Education, Mr. R.R, LOVEDAY, visited Canberra and discussed the

question of scholarships along with a number of other matters

with Senator Gorton. . - -

Senator Gorton said that two-year Commonwealth secondary

scholarships will be awarded on results obtained in 1965

Intermediate Examination of the University of Adelaide.

Commonwealth technical scholarships at the sub-tertiary

level will be awarded on results in the Intermediate Technical

Examination of the Education Department of South Australia.

Successful applicants will undertake Fourth Year studies at

school followed by approved Certificate courses at the South

Australian Institute of Technology, Diploma courses in Fine

Art and Advertising Art at the South Australian School of Art

or..."the Diploma in Agriculture at Roseworthy Agricultural College

In addition, a small number of technical scholarships

will be available for competition at the end of Fourth Year on

the basis of results in either the Leaving Examination or the

Leaving Technical Examination. A student who wins a scholarship

at this stage can proceed directly to an approved technical

Certificate course or to a Diploma course in Art or Agriculture.

Subject to satisfactory progress, technical scholarships extend

throughout the full length of the course, . '

Senator Gorton went on to say that a student who wins a

secondary scholarship may transfer to a technical course at

the beginning of either the first or the second year of the

scholarship.. Similarly, a student awarded a technical

scholarship may transfer to a secondary course. In either case

it is necessary for the Director, South Australian Education

Department, to be satisfied that the student is qualified to

enter the secondary or technical course to which he desires to

transfer. . .

It is expected that information statements and application

forms will be available by the end of September. . The closing

date for applications, which are to be lodged with the

Education Department of South Australia, will be November 1.' CANBERRA ' ■ ' ■ '
