PRESS STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER FOR IMMIGRATION,

' THE H O N . HUBERT OPPERMAN, M.P.

For release after 6 p,m. Thursday, September 9? 1965

The Good Neighbour Council of Victoria's proposed

survey to help migrant youth in Victoria will benefit the nation,

The results of the survey, which will be made public

and distributed to church, youth and other interested organisations,

will apply to migrant youth in other States =

The results will also serve as a valuable guide to

the problems of Australian youth in general, because young people

born in Australia are to' be included in the survey.

I commend the Good Neighbour Council of Victoria for

launching such important community work,

The problems of migrant youth in Australia were

discussed at the 1963 Australian Citizenship Convention in

Canberra.

The convention agreed that while young migrants were

becoming well settled in schools and industry, they had special

problems for which more could.be done»

The Good Neighbour Council of Victoria decided to

implement the conclusions of the convention and set up a

committee of experts to guide research,

• In this splendid project, the council has the full

support of the Department of Immigration which has supplied

research officers from its Field Survey Section to assist.
