PRESS STATEMENT BY THE HONOURABLE A.R. DOWNER, M.P.;

MINISTER FOR IMMIGRATION, IN REPLY TO DR. CAIRNS, M.P.,

ADELAIDE, 3rd OCTOBER, 1963

I am surprised that Dr. Cairns has given way to

using such extravagant language. Only this morning was his

letter of the 1st October received by my office in Canberra.

The facts are that Dr. Cairns first wrote to me

about Mr. and Mrs. Orr on the 2nd September.last. His

representations were very carefully considered by me, as

is my practice with all cases brought to - me by members of

Parliament and members of the public.

I wrote to him on the 25th September telling

him that I could not extend Mr. and Mrs. OrrsT permits to

remain in Australia, explaining my decision. It is, there

fore , quite incorrect of him to insinuate that I have not

formed my own opinion or used my own judgment on this matter.

Mr. and M r s . Orr will be required to depart from

Australia in due course after the expiration of their permits

but there is no question of their being suddenly hustled out

of the country.

Department of Immigration,

ADELAIDE. S.A.
