(Statement by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for

Trade, Mr. J. McEwen)

. Australia's first exhibition organised by Australian

Export Promotions in the Suva Trade and Industry Fair had already

proved to be an outstanding success, the Deputy Prime Minister·

and Minister for Trade, Mr. J.. McEwen, announced today.

"It is most encouraging to note that commerce and

industry are playing an active role in organising trade .promoil-oru.

ventures overseas." .

The Australian pavilion at the Fair was organised by

Australian Export Promotions Pty. L t d . This body is the official

organisation of the Associated Chambers of Manufactures of

Australia and the Associated Chambers of Commerce of Australia,

established to promote Australian products in overseas markets on

a non-profit basis.

Mr. McEwen said that the Department of Trade had

organised a prestige exhibit within the Australian pavilion.

Mr. McEwen said that a survey of the exhibitors after

the first two days of the Fair had show^vthat many had already

appointed agents and that a .joint manufacturing venture had been

entered into by another exhibitor. ·

The Australian Trade Commissioner for the Pacific area,

who is at present in Suva for the Fair, has reported that the

opinion of local businessmen is that the exhibition is an out­

standing success and will considerably add to the Australian image

in the South West. Pacific. ^

Mr. McEwen also said that the Department of Trade would

support Australian Export Promotions' next venture. An exhibition

is planned for Hong Kong in November to show Asian buyers a wide

range of Australian fashion goods and textiles,, foodstuffs and

manufactured products.
